Model United Nations Debate: Tianjin2018-01-16   Author : Mr. Devin Howard

Model United Nations, or MUN for short, is a simulation of the various committees and functions of the actual United Nations. Students role play as representatives of a given country and are expected to perform research and debate about complex global issues such as terrorism, the refugee crisis, international trade, nuclear or biological weapons, human trafficking, or many other contemporary problems that confront the international community.

It can be quite intimidating, hundreds of students from countries all over the world gather together and debate these serious topics, all while using high level, technical written and spoken English. Crowds of new people! Speaking extemporaneously! Negotiating and alliance building and trying to convince others to support your views!

Fortunately, the fourteen students who represented RCF Experimental School at the fifth annual Tianjin MUN conference (TIANMUN) were up to the challenge and performed exceptionally well, despite the fact that they had never been to an MUN conference before. On November 9th the students, together with Mr. Devin Howard and Ms. Madelyn, 王明月, boarded the C2221 fast train and headed to Tianjin for the three day conference, returning that Saturday, November 11th. Hosted at Tianjin International School the conference brought together students of many nationalities and served as a great opportunity for the RDFZ students to get practice, meet new people, and to be immersed in a competitive but friendly environment of debate.

During the fifth session of TIANMUN, I participated in the Human Right Council, which is the council that delegates from different countries strive for equal rights for vulnerable groups. As the delegate of Niger, a western African country with the highest child marriage rate of 74% each year, I together with other delegates drafted a resolution to eliminate the issue of child marriage to the most extent as well as gathered votes for our resolution. I was excited and gratified when every delegate voted for our resolution. Other resolutions including issues of IDP, disabled and abandoned infant were all discussed and voted as well. From this trip to TIANMUN, I not only learned the operation of United Nations, but also obtained knowledge of worldwide problems and techniques of formal writing by fully participating in the conference.

After the three days of the MUN activity in Tianjin, I’m going to give a brief summary.

In this activity, I took part in the UNDP (United Nation Development Programme) as France. My teammates and I worked together to solve the issue that is to promote the socioeconomic development of Southeast Asia. We wrote a resolution about how to solve the problem, and used this to persuade the delegates of other member nations. In the end, with the help of each other, our resolution passed.

My total feeling about this activity is pretty good, this activity not only helps me to improve my English, but also give me the opportunity to talk to foreigners and make new friends. It also helps me to work as a team and listen to others’ ideas, and improves my debate skills.

Also this trip to Tianjin improved my living skills. When I was in Beijing, I lived with my parents and I can say that I’m lacking some living skills. During the three days, I lived in the hotel and learned to be more independent.

I enjoyed the MUN activity very much, and I also hope that school will give us more activities like this.

I was very excited hearing that we have the chance to attend TIANMUN in my MUN elective class. To be honest, I never thought that I could join a MUN meeting and I was anxious and worried about it. Devin helped us a lot during Friday lunch breaks so that we can get together and work through our resolutions as well as the speeches for the committees. During the meetings in Tianjin I tried my best to make speeches and work out the resolution with my group, this improved my communicating skills and made me more active. I am looking forward for another MUN meeting!

Actually this was not the first time I took a part in the MUN, but it was the first time that I experienced the formal and the whole MUN in English indeed. I tried to tell myself not to be nervous, the teachers also encouraged us to be confident, but when I looked around and saw all the foreigners who are really relaxed and spoke English very fluent, I couldn’t control my nervousness, especially when I was in the room and unfamiliar with all the stuff and progression. I didn’t even understand what the chairs were talking about and what they were doing. But I couldn’t just give up or refuse to give a speech. I had to write an introduction which includes the simple explanation of the country, the standing and perspectives of your own topic, a brief speech of how you are going to change it and so on. I was totally bewildered, furthermore, it was the first night I was in the MUN.

It was really hard to understand the progression, to know that they were really doing, I could only guess, and it cost a lot of time. I also found my English ability is so far away from the foreigners, and wasn’t prepared as well as them. I realized that I had to put so many efforts on it and in that case I wouldn’t be so nervous and embarrassed. So I worked hard to check my research on the topic and tried to write more. I stayed up late to do that, and it worked. As I faced to the other delegates, I had the words to say, but not just be...nervous and hopeless.

Gradually I found interesting when I was in the conference. We could write notes on a piece of paper and send to another delegate, there were people who transferred the notes between the delegates and the chairs; we didn’t give an applause at any time but when the resolution passed; we can choose to not open questions to the delegates, and the chairs would say "that is in order."

Out of the time of the conference is really happy and relaxed, the meals there were really great, and we prepared for the conference during next day. It was really significant to have an opportunity of participating the TIANMUN this time for a few days, and I was really enjoyable to spend time with the friends and teammates. I am looking for the next time if we can get together and go to the MUN.

"The delegate of Venezuela" the familiar sound still echoes around my brain.

On November 9 Mr. Devin took us by train to this activity. I enjoyed it for 3 short days. I liked it very much, the delegates of every country were very kind. Before I got there I was worried about my English. But after that I not only thought English is not a problem, after this conference my English skills increased a lot, maybe this is because they are all speak English there.

It was a wonderful conference. At this conference I also made a lot of friends, and in the school we maybe not very close to each other but after that we became a very good friends. I’m very glad I joined this conference, it brought me a wonderful experience. Also I need to thank school and Mr.Devin to give us this chance. To make us develop English skills and get such a rich experience.

We went to Tianjin for three days to attend an MUN conference and I was part of the Advisory Panel. It’s an honor for me to represent as The People’s Republic of China. The topic I chose was about improving global defensive measures against terrorism. I spent about two weeks on this topic before we go and I wrote a resolution to solve this problem.

After we arrived at Tianjin, the school which held the conference sent people to pick us up and our hotel is quite good because it has free Wi-Fi and also it only takes 3 or 4 minutes of walk to the school. The food in the school is quite delicious, we had pizza, fried chicken and also other stuff.

On the first day of MUN I got timid and nervous that I could hardly speak any words because people around me are all native speakers and the peer pressure was just so much. However after the first day I got used to it and made several speeches. Luckily, most of the resolutions in our group passed.

All in all, I gain a lot of experience in the MUN trip and also I became more and more confident while speaking in front of a group of strange people.

For me, this activity can be regarded as a priceless chance which exercised both my logical thinking and negotiating skills. I have never gone to any MUN before this, so as the time passed by, I’m a little afraid of trying to participate in activities like this. But with the help of our MUN elective course teacher and his detailed explanation, my confidence about it increased in a rapid way, therefore, the result turns out to be great. Through the process, I have not only broadened my horizon, but also fully acknowledged the spirit of the United Nations. It is hard to describe how grateful I am to the teachers who are willing to help with my resolution until the last minute. Thanks to our MUN teacher, Mr. Howard and the support of RCF Experimental School, this activity have become one of my most meaningful and unforgettable experience.
